Treating algae is not the same as restoring water

A high-profile algae outbreak at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool highlights a costly industry mistake: treating blooms without fixing the biology driving them.

The recent algae bloom at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is more than a headline, it is a clear example of a problem we see across the water restoration industry.

After a major renovation, the pool turned green again within days. The response relied on familiar tools: hydrogen peroxide and an ozone nanobubble system. Both can kill algae. But neither removes the underlying nutrient load and organic material feeding the bloom.

That distinction matters.

At Nano Gas™ Environmental, we have long said that effective restoration is not about repeatedly knocking back visible algae. It is about changing the water body’s internal biology so the conditions that cause blooms are reduced at the source.

The bigger issue: symptom treatment vs. system restoration

Algae blooms do not happen in isolation. They are driven by excess nutrients, accumulated organics, poor oxygen conditions, and heat. Oxidizers can create a temporary visual improvement, but if the root cause remains, the bloom returns.

That is why many water bodies get trapped in an expensive cycle:

Algae appears.

Chemical or oxidation treatment is applied.

The water temporarily clears.

Nutrients and organics remain.

Algae returns.

This is not long-term restoration. It is retreatment.

What makes our approach different

Oxygen nanobubbles work differently.

Rather than targeting only the algae itself, oxygen nanobubbles help create a healthy aerobic environment that supports beneficial bacteria. Those bacteria consume the organic material that fuels recurring blooms. The result is a more stable and natural restoration process – one that addresses the cause, not just the visible symptom.

This approach offers several important advantages:

  • Targets root conditions, not just surface algae
  • Supports beneficial biology instead of repeatedly shocking the system
  • Leaves no toxic residue
  • Improves conditions for fish and wildlife
  • Reduces the need for repeated intervention

Proof in the field: Stockdale case study

Our work in Stockdale demonstrates what this looks like in practice.

In that project, Nano Gas Environmental deployed oxygen nanobubble technology to restore lagoon health by improving oxygen availability and supporting the natural biological breakdown of accumulated organic matter. Instead of relying on a cycle of reactive chemical treatment, the system helped shift the lagoon toward a more balanced and sustainable condition.

The lesson from Stockdale is the same lesson visible in Washington: if you want lasting water quality improvement, you must address the biological and environmental drivers beneath the bloom.

Why this matters to customers and investors

For customers, this means a smarter restoration strategy – one designed for long-term results, operational stability, and reduced repeat treatment costs.

For investors, it reinforces the value of Nano Gas Environmental’s position in the market. High-visibility failures in conventional treatment approaches continue to show the need for solutions that are both scientifically grounded and operationally sustainable.

We are not simply reacting to algae. We are advancing a better model for water restoration.

Closing

At Nano Gas™ Environmental, we believe the future of water treatment lies in restoring ecological balance, not chasing symptoms.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool story shows why that matters. The Stockdale case study shows that it works. https://nanogasenvironmental.com/nano-gas-lagoon-restoration-stockdale-case-study/

Nano Gas ™ Environmental is on top of it with technology built for sustainable restoration, healthier water systems, and better long-term outcomes.
